About the Book

Title: A Slight Change of Plans
Series: Best-Laid Plans #2
Author: Denise M. Colby
Publisher: Scrivenings Press
Release Date: May 27, 2025
Genre: Christian Historical Romance
She believes she doesn’t matter.
Jenny Millard’s hopes for security and stability as a schoolmarm out west are dashed when her schoolhouse closes, and no positions are available nearby. With only enough money for a one-way train fare, Jenny heads to her friend’s home uncertain of her next step.
His scars have made him an unlovable outcast.
Newcomer Ren Lyman prefers to keep to himself, hiding in the back of the blacksmith shop to avoid the stares at the scars left by a childhood accident. When he comes across a lost stranger, he’s surprised when she doesn’t recoil at his appearance, and even more so at his eagerness to assist her.
As Jenny settles into the welcoming, but small, town of Washton, she can’t help but come across Ren, especially since his daily constitutional takes him along the same path. It doesn’t take long for them to form a connection that breaks down the walls erected by years of hurt. But when strange occurrences unsettle the townspeople, it seems their chance at happiness might be at risk.
Will Jenny and Ren discover that they’re enough—for God, and each other?

My Impressions
“Don’t let fear get in the way of your faith.”
In 1870 California, Jenny Millard and Ren Lyman, the two main characters of A Slight Change of Plans by Denise M. Colby, certainly have to learn this lesson. Both are very fearful in their own way.
Jenny’s plans for the future have a way of falling through repeatedly. Plus, her deep-seated issue is her feeling insignificant and unloved. Coming from a family who uses her for her ability to work hard then sends her on her own without care or regret, Jenny extends that idea of neglect to the Heavenly Father. How could He care for her, when it seemed she didn’t matter to anyone else? Jenny’s new friends in Washton, CA, have to show her that she does indeed matter to them and to God.
What a wonderful little town Washton, CA, is, with its friendly, accepting people. Ren is badly scarred from a childhood accident and believes that he is a monster to look at and a reject. Life has taught him this. But Gideon, Luke, Jenny, and others show him that it’s his gentleness, kindness, compassion, quick thinking, and astuteness that matter. It isn’t until both Jenny and Gideon hear more of God’s Word that they realize God has a better plan for their lives than their worries and fears. “Faith over fear.” Little do they know how much they will need that phrase!
I loved getting to know the secondary characters. It would be so neat to spend a Sunday afternoon with Arthur, Chrissy, Gideon, Luke, and Livvy! And the strangest secondary critter of all- the town mascot, a rather scary acting rooster named Bert! Between Bert and Joshua, we have a couple of scene stealers!
Slowly, we are made aware of some less desirable elements in Washton and how they will play into the scenario. I was quite amazed at the twists in the plot here!
I received a copy of the book from the author through JustRead Tours. I also bought my own copy. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“All my life, I’ve wanted someone to acknowledge me. To really see me. You do. You see me. And I’m not sure what to do with that.”
“You equate your worth based on what you can accomplish.”- Livvy to Jenny
“That’s how we show value to those around us.” “But not to God, Jenny. You matter to Him no matter what you do. You don’t have to accomplish anything to receive His love.”
“God had a way of pushing him out of his comfort zone, molding and shaping each and every day, till his original plan had changed slightly. Hardly noticeable until afterward, when the new shape was formed. Much like his work with metal.”

Carol,
I apologize, but no one else has mentioned this problem! I will go back and check.

It’s almost like russian roulette! Since the same contest often shows up on multiple sites, sometimes it will load and sometimes it will not. On this one, it finally loaded on browser #3! I read the suggestions, and am perfectly willing to try them, but am not quite sure what cross-site tracking is. Haven’t been able to ask my computer nerd grandson yet! Will also try holding the link down for awhile.
Will let you know, and thanks to those who offered suggestions.

Carol,
Yikes! Roxanne had a lot better /more k owledgeable solutions than I would have! The only things I can really suggest, is, if you’re on your phone, make sure other windows are closed. If I have multiple windows open, no go.
Restart your phone. Amazing how this simple, ridiculous solution works— sometimes. 🤣
Beyond that, makes sense sure you’re in your computer, not phone.
These may or may not help. Praying it’ll start working better for you!

Carol,
Try holding the link down for a second. That works for me. Let me know! Also, you could try other posts and see if you have more success. I hope you do, and I hope you will let me know! I’m sorry for the issues and thank you!

It’s very spotty, almost Russian Roulette for contests. It works on some browsers, then switches; some sites (since several frequently have the same contests), then switches. Maybe it’s my computer, rather than the browsers, sites, etc. Will have to live with it for now I guess.

I’m sorry, Carol, I wish I had the tech ability of my brothers to help you! I think I may have my phone doing that every now and then!

Roxanne,
Yay! Did you have any trouble entering the contest?

Becky, I had no problem entering the contest. The problem Carol may be having is that the setting to prevent cross-site tracking is turned on. I have to turn mine off for certain activities such as entering contests. I just turn it back on afterward. I have also had content blockers interfere at times and had to turn them off for those pages and websites. I hope this info helps Carol.
