This wasn’t how she imagined coming home. In all the long months she’d dreamed of returning to Rachel’s Crossing, Kentucky, never once had Eve Lantz pictured her homecoming beginning like this. With death waiting for her.
“He’s dead, Eve.”
Those simple words shattered her world.
Her bruder, Akin, was dead.
The lights of Rachel’s Crossing blurred through her tears. Eve pulled back on the reins and slowed the mare, pulling the buggy over to the side of the road.
She hadn’t stopped crying since the call came in from her Englischer friend, Casey Masterson, a police officer with the Rachel’s Crossing force. Casey had called the bakery where Eve worked in Munfordville, a town near Rachel’s Crossing.
